Victorian Cornish Carols

Number 1

Redruth & St Agnes District

Published by Federation of Old Cornwall Societies

Published October 2010

This A4 size book contains a selection of 33 musical scores of  Cornish Christmas Carols collected and published by Robert H. Heath in Redruth in 1889. Heath was a local teacher of music and organist at the Redruth Parish church. These carols tunes are in the Cornish style and were handed down from father to son and sung not only in church or chapels but also deep underground in the mines, on street corners and in the local inns. Because they are very simple with a basic four part harmony a precise knowledge of music was not required to perform them. Consequently, the Cornish carried their "tunes" with them wherever they went and Robert H. Heath took them to South Africa where he became the organist at Johannesburg Cathedral. Today you can hear them performed from Grass Valley, California, to Moonta, Australia as well as many places in between wherever the Cornish settled.

A splendid present for anyone with an interest in Cornish music.

"All of me"

by

Brenda Wootton

The discovery of the master tapes of this concert, recorded in 1984, has provided the material for the first new album by Brenda in fifteen years and marks a significant time when she was at the peak of her musical career.

It's unique, as it is the one and only time Brenda has recorded before a live audience and confirms that as a singer from Cornwall she has no parallel. This collection of songs has put her back into the spotlight for a 'final', captivating performance.

This album is a rare combination of material about Cornwall, romantic ballads, jazz and blues, but mostly it's for anyone who loves Cornwall.

It's nostalgic to those who remember Brenda singing in local folk clubs and, internationally, at festivals and concerts across the world, and is relevant today to a new audience, as Brenda's voice and repertoire distinctively captures the essence of her 'country'.

  Angletwitch and Poppydock

Hear some Cornish Dialect

"Angletwitch & Poppydocks"

Cornish Dialect Words Rhymes & Stories

"Angletwitch is the dialect word for Earthworm in West Cornwall whilst Poppydocks is dialect for Foxgloves in the same area. In North Cornwall the dialect for Foxgloves is Floppydocks which demonstrates how Cornish Dialect may change in different parts of Cornwall.

Since 1920 members of the Old Cornwall movement have striven to keep alive Cornish dialect. They have collected words, phrases and stories as well as writing poetry and stories of their own using dialect words. In 1925 the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies published its first "Old Cornwall" Journal and from then on Cornish Dialect has appeared in many issues. This book contains a collection of stories and poems taken from past Journals plus words and sayings from different areas.

This will make a lovely present for those interested in the Social History of Cornwall.
